What is Expressive Arts Therapy?
Expressive Arts Therapy is an arts-based approach that uses the imagination to engage and support the client in exploring, expressing, and accessing their inner resources. The expressive arts combine the visual arts, movement, drama, music, writing, and other creative processes to create space for deep personal growth and transformation.
Expressive Arts is never about the creation and always about the process. Creativity is used to explore inner experiences, find new possibilities and develop and nurture self-understanding.
I believe that a gentle approach based on connection, rapport, and trust is important in therapy. From here we can begin to imagine, play, and grow.
About Me
My name is Kim Richards and I am a certified Expressive Arts Therapist working in the city of Cranbrook. I hold a Masters of Education in Special Education from the University of British Columbia. I completed my Expressive Arts Therapy training at Langara College, Vancouver, British Columbia. I am a professional member of the Ontario Expressive Arts Therapy Association (OEATA), soon to be the Canadian Expressive Arts Therapy Association (CEATA). I am also an affiliate member of the Satir Institute of the Pacific. My philosophy is to meet others where they are, and I have discovered that there is a wonder-filled place in the imagination that creates the connection, playful space, and safety that enables clients to make choices and grow in both their inner and outer worlds.
The Expressive Arts has filled an important space in my work supporting children and teens, as it provides an AMAZING tool for self-concept and identity exploration while building connection with self and others. I am passionate about bringing these opportunities to more and more clients and students.
As an Expressive Arts Therapist I work from an intermodal approach, following the imagination and lead of my clients. The modalities used are truly LIMITLESS, and can often include painting, drawing, writing, voice, movement, play, music, and drama. It really depends on the tools of creativity that the client connects with and these can change as our sessions progress. I work with individuals and groups, including both adults and children.
If the Expressive Art Therapy approach intrigues you or you have questions or would like more information, do not hesitate to contact me or browse the other areas of this website. I would love to connect and explore the process of Expressive Arts with you! It truly is my passion and I look forward to connecting.
